Fall 2022 300-HR Advanced Yoga Study and Teacher Training
The Ivy Yoga School (IYS) Program is a Classical Yoga school. This training will be held at Ashtanga Yoga Charlottesville, 906 Monticello Rd.
Our In- depth study and teacher training at The Ivy Yoga School emphasizes the importance of staying close to tradition and the Parampara (lineage- from teacher to teacher). We recognize how popular yoga has become these days and endeavor to bring students and future teachers back to the roots of yoga practice and study. The training will be led by Liam Buckley and Carroll Ann Friedmann, who bring over 20 years of study and practice to the course and look forward to sharing their love and devotion with interested students. Padmasri Marques will be anatomy faculty.
Students will come away from this training and study feeling confident in teaching asana with precise alignment cues, effective adjustments, and a working knowledge of physical anatomy.
Students will be introduced to the philosophy behind the practice; reading and discussing ancient texts that have stunning relevance to today. We will immerse ourselves in the study, practice and lifestyle of yoga in order to bring this experience into our lives. Our students will be equipped to serve the larger community as advanced yoga teachers; the change they will experience in themselves can extend to their relationships, communities and world.
Other Topics to be covered:
Asana Study: All classes of asana and their corresponding energetic patterns will be explored in-depth. We will learn how to observe bodies moving as well as static and explore the underlying alignment principles pertaining to each class of asana.
Hands-On Teaching Methods: Developing the skill to observe and offer supportive hands-on assists to students in guided classes will be taught. The course will explore ways of observation and assistance, in which the teacher guides the student into deeper awareness and understanding of the asana, without applying force or causing harm.
Verbal Teaching Skills: It is essential for the teacher to communicate clearly and without distraction when guiding class. This course will help hone the skills needed to guide students through class with helpful verbal cues.
Pranayama and Meditation: Asana practice moves the practitioner inward towards self-observation. This course will teach basic and appropriate methods of pranayama and meditation along with their traditional benefits. Teaching students to understand, observe and control the breath is the first step towards meditative states of mind.
Sanskrit and Chanting: Correct pronunciation of asana names, traditional mantra and classical sutra recitation is essential for teaching yoga in a classical and traditional system.
Anatomy: Understanding the basic anatomy in asana can help fine-tune our ability to observe various bodies in stillness and motion. Our anatomy study will bring attention not only to the strictly “physical” aspect of anatomy, but also to the anatomy of the “energy body” in yoga practice. Working with injury and posture modifications will also be explored.
Philosophy: Yoga asana should not be separated from the philosophical context from which they were born. The training course will continually dive deeper into the traditional teachings of Patanjali’s Classical Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita (Song of the Lord) and the Upanishadic texts. With each topic covered, reference to the philosophical context will be explored and discussed and how these philosophical themes are just as relevant for our lives today.
Ayurveda: a study of Ayurveda complements the understanding of the yogic lifestyle. From diet to “dosha”, to practices of seasonal cleansing, and daily routine, Ayurveda is the science of life that brings an individualized approach to the traditional method of yoga.
